Safety and hygiene are two major concerns when it comes to managing waste in apartment buildings. Overflowing trash bins and improper disposal methods create tripping hazards, especially in common areas such as garbage rooms, hallways, and parking lots. Trash bags left outside dumpsters can leak, creating slippery surfaces that pose risks for residents and maintenance staff. A waste compactor eliminates these issues by keeping trash securely packed and reducing the chances of loose waste cluttering shared spaces. We provide waste management equipment designed to improve both safety and efficiency in apartment building waste disposal.
Fire safety is another major concern in waste management. Piled-up garbage, especially paper and cardboard waste, increases the risk of fire hazards, particularly in buildings where waste is stored near heating units or electrical equipment. A waste compactor minimizes these risks by compressing and sealing waste, making it less likely to catch fire. This is especially crucial for apartment complexes with centralized waste disposal areas. Our waste compactors help property managers improve fire safety while keeping garbage areas organized and under control.
Another important benefit of using a trash compactor is the improvement of overall cleanliness. Open garbage bins often produce strong odors, particularly in warmer months when trash decomposes faster. These odors can spread into common areas, making garbage rooms and nearby hallways unpleasant for residents. Our waste compactors help control this problem by sealing and compressing waste, keeping unpleasant smells contained. Additionally, because compacted trash takes up less space, it reduces the likelihood of trash overflowing and spilling into walkways. This not only improves the quality of life for residents but also makes waste management easier for property staff.

Dear Mr. Markle,
I have been working in the Plant Operations of Hospitals for the past 20 years. During that time I have had the responsibility of maintaining various autoclaves for the treatment of biohazardous medical waste.
When I came to Doctors Medical Center a year and a half ago I found myself in charge of maintaining a Mark-Costello Co. autoclave that was nearly eight years old. After my past experience of trying to keep a high vacuum system with consistent problems in operation, I find maintaining the Mark-Costello gravity fed autoclave a pleasure, as there is seldom a malfunction. I attribute this to the fact they have kept the design simple with no need for highly technical maintenance and high dollar repair parts.
As a point of information, the Model we operate is a AS 512 equipped with a unique “pull out drawer” making it easy for the Housekeeping Staff to load. This unit has a capacity of approximately 750 lbs. per cycle.
We expect to keep our Mark-Costello autoclave in operation for another 8 years or longer !
Dear Mr. Markle:
San Ramon regional Medical Center has owned and operated a Model AS46 Mark-Costello Medical Waste Sterilizer for the past eight years. We are pleased with performance of this equipment and have had a fine working relationship with the Mark-Costello Company. The system continues to function well and allows our facility to avoid the liability and high cost of packaging and hauling untreated infectious waste.
We Anticipate several more years of operation from this waste treatment system

“We have been very pleased with the performance and the cost savings that the trash compactors from The Mark-Costello Company have provided to our school district.”
My name is David E. and I am responsible for a Mark Costello Co. Auto-Clave, at an inflight Kitchen out here in Kona Hawaii, that is overseen by the USDA / Custom and Borders, federal inspectors. (as you can imagine that is a challenge in its self).
The products that Mark Costello Co. is producing are of good quality. The auto – clave that I am responsible for works 24/7, with very few break downs. This is the only unit available in Kona, making daily operation is critical.
It is nice to know that when I call for tech support and parts, the courteous staff always responds promptly. Being out here in the middle of the pacific, that is crucial to our operation.
I would highly recommend Mark Costello Co.
Installing a trash compactor in an apartment building offers several practical advantages. In San Diego, where efficient waste management is increasingly important, compactors help reduce the volume of trash, leading to fewer pickups and lower waste disposal costs. They also minimize overflowing bins, keep trash areas cleaner, and limit odors. Additionally, compactors discourage pests and improve overall hygiene for residents by keeping garbage sealed and contained.
Apartment buildings can benefit from a few different types of compactors, each designed to meet specific space and waste volume needs. Stationary compactors are fixed in place and are suitable for buildings with higher trash output, as they work with large collection containers. Self-contained compactors are ideal when wet or mixed waste is common because they seal in liquids and odors. Vertical compactors are best for smaller buildings or tight spaces, offering powerful compression in a more compact design.
One of the key factors in selecting a trash compactor for an apartment building is how much space is available for installation. Many modern compactors are designed to fit in tight areas such as trash rooms, alleys, or behind buildings. For example, some units are shorter than four feet in length, making them easy to install even where space is limited. Property managers should work with providers who offer on-site evaluations to determine the best layout and ensure safe and efficient setup.
Trash compactors contribute significantly to the safety and cleanliness of apartment communities. By compressing waste into sealed containers, they reduce the chance of loose bags piling up or spilling, which lowers the risk of slip hazards and minimizes exposure to harmful bacteria. They also prevent animals and insects from accessing waste, and because compacted trash takes up less room, garbage areas remain neater and easier to maintain.
Today’s apartment building compactors come equipped with several helpful features that make daily operation easier and more efficient. These units often include photoelectric sensors that automatically start compacting when trash is detected, reducing manual handling. Many also offer quick compaction cycles, usually under 20 seconds, and come with full bin indicators to prevent overfilling. Control panels are built for durability and ease of use, often protected from dust and moisture for long-term reliability.
Choosing the right trash compactor depends on a variety of building-specific factors. Property managers should consider the volume and type of waste produced, the space available for installation, and the desired maintenance schedule. For example, buildings with mostly dry waste might opt for a vertical compactor, while those dealing with wet garbage may need a self-contained model. It’s also important to select a unit that offers dependable service and fits within the budget while still meeting all waste management goals.
